Island Metric - Solution

Written by Nishant Pappireddi

Answer: MUSEUM OF MODERN ART

Each rebus clues a landmark in Manhattan. Taking the Manhattan Distance between each pair of landmarks (using the Avenue and Street numbers as coordinates) and indexing into the alphabet gives the cluephrase MOMA FULL NAME. This gives the answer MUSEUM OF MODERN ART.

Note: For calculating Manhattan Distances, Lexington, Park, and Madison Avenues are considered as 3.5th, 4th, and 4.5th Avenues. Thus, Lexington and Madison Avenues are ignored if counting the distance in blocks.

Author's Notes

The original version of this puzzle was within a mini-hunt puzzle that had mini-puzzles for major cities in the Acela Corridor. This one was based on New York City, and originally just showed pictures of the pairs of landmarks. Once it became its own separate puzzle, I added another step, cluing the landmarks using rebuses. I had to find a lot of landmarks so I could get all the correct Manhattan distances without reusing any landmarks, but it turned out well in the end. The graph paper background was a cute artistic touch suggested by a testsolver to clue the Manhattan grid.
