In this puzzle, we are greeted with a crossword, but each clue has a word transcribed in one of 5 cryptic scripts after it.
Our first step is to identify these scripts, which are all fictional constructed scripts from various media. They are:
Then we convert the scripted words to English, which gets us:
# | Scripted Word | Script | English Transcription |
---|---|---|---|
1 | First Ones | BACKSTROKE | |
2 | Atlantean | KILN | |
3 | Gallifreyan | ALKALI | |
4 | Alienese | GO BOARD | |
5 | Halo Covenant | NEEDLE | |
6 | First Ones | SKIN CARE | |
7 | Halo Covenant | CLULEY | |
8 | Gallifreyan | AMARILLO | |
9 | Atlantean | FRONT LINE | |
10 | Alienese | NARRATOR | |
11 | Halo Covenant | IO | |
12 | Halo Covenant | DELGADO | |
13 | Atlantean | ALFONSO IV | |
14 | First Ones | MACHINE | |
15 | Alienese | EQUALLY | |
16 | Alienese | BANQIAO DAM | |
17 | Atlantean | ANSARI | |
18 | First Ones | BROTHERS | |
19 | Gallifreyan | WHAT | |
20 | Gallifreyan | EVENTUALLY |
As the flavortext indicates, these are not very good answers—they don’t go with the clues at all! But they do fit in the crossword, so we’ll fit them in there. Once the grid is filled out, reading the highlighted letters gives us the clue “ KLINGON KALEL NOLDOR QOHOR NAVI". These are all fictional people or groups associated with a conlang.

Clue | Explanation |
---|---|
KLINGON | A species from Star Trek that speak the language Klingon |
KALEL | The Kryptonese name of Superman |
NOLDOR | A clan of elves who speak Quenya from Lord of the Rings |
QOHOR | A city, formerly part of the Valyrian Freehold in Game of Thrones |
NAVI | The race of blue-skinned aliens from Avatar that speak Na’vi |
We haven’t used the crossword clues yet, and they don’t seem to have good English solutions that fit in the grid. So we’ll answer them in these conlangs, with each script from before corresponding to one language. We find the correct matching with a little trial and error; many ideas (like “leaf-shaped”) only exist in one of the languages, and other clues (like “...the last of one’s kind”) hint towards certain media. The script-language matching we get is:
ALIENESE | KRYPTONESE |
ATLANTEAN | NA'VI |
FIRST ONES | HIGH VALYRIAN |
GALLIFREYAN | QUENYA |
HALO COVENANT | KLINGON |
Here are the solutions to every clue, and one possible explanation of how to find them:
Language | Clue | Answer | Answer Meaning | Solving Notes |
Klingon | 7. Large ship used to transport refuse and trash | veQDuj | garbage scow | There is no word for this in any of the other languages (searching their dictionaries for "garbage" or its synonyms confirms this). This makes sense because Klingon is one of the most thorough conlangs, and because ships like this don't really exist in the other media. |
Klingon | 12. This band keeps long hair in place | choljaH | ponytail holder | There is no word for this in any of the other languages (searching their dictionaries for "ponytail" or "hair" confirms this). This makes sense because Klingon is one of the most thorough conlangs, with words for many obscure or mundane things. |
Klingon | 5. How one might sarcastically describe someone who is less than charming | wejpuH | charming (used only ironically) | Searching the Klingon dictionary for "charming" (the most straightforward sarcastic answer to the clue) or for "ironic" finds this, which is too bizarre and specific to be wrong. |
Klingon | 11. Communicate information over a channel or cable | lI’ | transmit data (to a place) | Searching the Klingon dictionary for "transmit" or "data" finds this. There are other similar words, but none that are two letters long. |
Kryptonese | 15. Describes the last of one's kind | chahvia | solitary, only, singular, sole, lone | Superman/Kal-el is famously the last of his kind (at least he was when first introduced, and still is called "the last son of Krypton"), so this makes us think it could be Kryptonese. Searching "sole" (as in "sole survivor") or "only" or "lone" in the Kryptonese dictionary will find this word. |
Kryptonese | 16. It's represented by a symbol that looks like an S | shahrrehth | hope, confidence, faith, optimism | This is a reference to Man of Steel (and a few other Superman stories) where it's explained that the symbol Superman wears is not an "S," but rather a Kryptonian symbol for hope. Searching for "hope" in the Kryptonese dictionary finds this word. |
Kryptonese | 10. History of one's family | threiadh | lineage, ancestry | Another important idea in many Superman stories, we find this word in the Kryptonese dictionary by searching for "lineage" or "ancestry." High Valyrian is the only other language here to have a word for this, and it's too short. |
Kryptonese | 4. Toss or launch | sidhaol | throw, cast, fling, launch, toss, lob | Searching basically any synonym of "throw" in the Kryptonese dictionary finds this word. |
Quenya | 20. Resembling the form of a plant’s green extremity | lassecanta | leaf-shaped | There is no word for this in any of the other languages (searching their dictionaries for "leaf" confirms this). This makes sense because elves are the only ones who would make a word for this. |
Quenya | 3. Describes one who conditions and brushes every day | findel | having beautiful hair | Searching for "hair" in the Quenya dictionary finds this, along with over a dozen hair-related words because elves love their hair (another clue that this goes with Quenya). There is no word for this in any of the other languages, of course. |
Quenya | 19. Male ruler of a nation or clan | aran | king | The clue definitely means "king" (and the word "clan" points to Quenya over some of the other people, who don't live in clans). There are many Quenya words for different kinds of king, but only this one has four letters. |
Quenya | 8. Indescribable, like most dreams | únyárima | impossible to recount | Definitely the hardest Quenya word here, we could find it by searching for "impossible" or "recount," or by skimming through their dictionary once you're sure this set of clues is for Quenya. |
High Valyrian | 6. Polite response to thanks | biarvose | you're welcome | The clue definitely means "you're welcome," which we find in the High Valyrian dictionary. There is no word for this in any of the other languages (you could construct a phrase conveying the same idea, but none translate directly to "you're welcome"). |
High Valyrian | 14. It follows a baby during childbirth | sikarys | placenta, afterbirth | There is no word for this in any of the other languages. Such a specific thing to go in such a small language, but if any of these fictional media needed to describe afterbirth, it would be Game of Thrones, wouldn't it? |
High Valyrian | 1. One who commits transgressions | qringaomio | evildoer, sinner | Searching for "sinner" in the High Valyrian dictionary finds this word. So does skimming it ourselves, which we can do once we're sure this set is High Valyrian, because it's got so few words. |
High Valyrian | 18. To emit a low, wild, guttural sound | rhovagon | to shout, to bark, to make a frightful or ugly sound, to make a terrible noise | Searching for "sound" or "noise" in the High Valyrian dictionary finds this word. So does skimming it ourselves, which we can do once we're sure this set is High Valyrian, because it's got so few words. |
Na'vi | 13. Slang for moron | Jakesully | moron, toruk maktoyu | Searching for "moron" in the Na'vi dictionary finds this very interesting word (the only word in Na'Vi to include a "J", which is helpful if you already have "choljaH"). It also finds another word for "moron," but this one, being a recently borrowed word, is more accurately called "slang". It's the only one long enough for the crossword anyway. |
Na'vi | 9. Words prepared for ceremony | säftxulì’u | speech, oration | This clue might point us towards Na'vi, as these people have several memorable ceremonies in their culture. Searching the Na'vi dictionary for "speech" finds this word. |
Na'vi | 2. Clutch or grab | fyep | hold in the hand, grasp, grip | Searching the Na'vi dictionary for "hold" or "grasp" finds this word. |
Na'vi | 17. Great aptitude in a skill | tsulfä | mastery | Searching the Na'vi dictionary for "skill" will find the related word for "master" (located very near the word for mastery). We can also find it by skimming the short dictionary once we're sure this set is Na'vi. |

The flavor text instructs us to “sort out each person’s contribution,” so we extract a word for each language by reading left-to-right and top-to-bottom in just the words written in that language. This gives us:
Language | Word | Meaning |
---|---|---|
Klingon | wejDIch | Third |
Kryptonese | shehd | Person |
Quenya | iluisa | Omniscient |
High Valyrian | ia | Or |
Na'vi | fpìlfya | Way of Thinking, Thought Pattern |
The final cluephrase is "Third person omniscient; or, way of thinking"; the former is a literary POINT OF VIEW and the latter means POINT OF VIEW as well.
I had a lot of fun writing First Ones and Circular Gallifreyan for this puzzle, since both languages allow for a lot of creative freedom. With First Ones in particular, the lines above the main branch are purely decorative and often pictographic, so I tried to make “backstroke” look like a person swimming backstroke, put a nose in the middle of “skin care,” and shaped “brothers” like a heart. I also was a bit flexible with syllable breaks to make the words look better (the She-Ra writers do the same thing, so I felt justified). There were a few cool writing systems/features we weren’t able to use: when Atlantean is written over multiple lines, it alternates between going left-to-right and right-to-left, so it flows like water. And while all of the writing systems we used are more or less English ciphers, a few iterations of Hylian (from The Legend of Zelda) were ciphers to Japanese Kana instead!
The spoken languages were also really interesting. We tried to use especially unique words from each language, but were constrained due to our extraction method and the fact that these languages have relatively small vocabularies. Here are some interesting words that didn’t make it into the puzzle:
